Appendicitis - is an inflammation of the vermiform appendage (appendix).
One of the most frequent medical conditions of the abdominal cavity which require surgical procedure.
The first description of the appendix is mentioned in the works of Leonardo da Vinci as well as Andreas Vesalius in the XVI century.
Appendicitis may occur to patients at any age, however it is more likely to develop itself between the age of 10 and 30; appendicitis occurs both to men and women.
The are three different causative agents for appendicitis:
- infectious - some contagious deseases like typhoid fever, tuberculosis, parasitic invasions may cause appendicitis on their own account
- vascular - systemic [visceral] angiitises may act as appendicitis causative agents
- endocrinous - the mucous memebrane of the appendix secrets a considerable amount of hormones which may cause its inflammation.
Appendicitis is treated by operative (surgical) intervention.
