New Year - January 1: New Year's Day is one the most favorite holidays in Russia. Both grown-ups and children are happy on this day. n the Eve of this holiday or just on this very day everybody give presents to each other, have fun, make fireworks, decorate pine and fur-trees, cook delicious things and lay the holiday table. The unchangeable participants of this holiday are Farther Frost and his granddaughter "Snegurochka"(a snow girl). The holiday lasts till next morning. Everyone who believes in good says an intimate wish and thanks God for everything good that had happened that year. For the first time this holiday was announced by Peter 1 's order dated by January 20, 700. This order gave the detailed instructions how to celebrate New Year's Day. Many people used to see the New Year in on January 14, (according to the old calendar). And the tradition of telling fortunes at this night is very popular among young ladies and fellows, who is willing to know at least a little bit about their near future.
Orthodox Christmas - January 7: This period from 7 till 19th of January is the best period for telling fortunes, as it is the Saint Christmas week, when people have fun, ware fancy-dresses and walk from one home to another asking for favor.
In the night of the 7th of January (according to the orthodox calendar) is Christmas. In Christmas holidays people try to be better, purer (cleaner); it is the time when Christian values take peculiar importance (meaning), it is time for good deeds. Christmas-is the holiday of waiting for miracles. As once it had happened in Vifliem - the Rescuer of humanity was born, so it must happen every year on this day. That's why both grown-ups and children are waiting for Christmas with such impatience and even though miracle doesn't take place the holiday is very nice with its unique mixture of folk and Christian customs and tradition.
Old New Year - January 13: holiday in memory of Old Calendar New Year. Celebarated as a family holiday.

Happy New Year!
New Year’s Day is a happy holiday. I like it very much. It is in the middle of winter and there is a lot of snow on the ground, on the houses and on the trees. My friends and I like to play in the yard, we play snowballs and make a snowman. We do not go to school because we have winter holidays at that time.
On the 31st of December Mother comes home from work early. She begins to prepare good things for the New Year party, and mf sister helps her.
Father brings home a green New Year Tree. We put it in the middle of the living-room and my sister Nelly and I put toys, small flags and lights of all colours on it. The New Year Tree looks very nice with red, green, blue and yellow lights on it.
After dinner the door opens and Father Frost comes in. He has a big bag with presents in it. He says, "I wish you a Happy New Year. Here are New Year presents for you” and gives presents to my little sister and me. We are happy to get presents from him.
Then we watch TV and go to bed only at ten o’clock.
On the 1st of January I get up early in the morning and run to the living-room. There under the tree I see presents for Nelly and me from Dad and Mum.
Then Father and Mother come into the room. I thank them for their presents and give them my present — a picture of our family. I say, “Happy New Year” and they answer ‘The same to you.”
In the afternoon my friend comes to see me. We wish each other a Happy New Year and go for a walk.

31 декабря мама приходит рано с работы. Она начинает готовить хорошие вещи для новогодней вечеринки, и моя сестра помогает ей.
Папа приносит домой новогоднюю елку. Мы ставим ее посередине гостиной, и моя сестра Нелли и я вешаем игрушки, маленькие флажки и фонарики на нее. Новогодняя елка смотрится очень красиво с красными, зелеными, синими и желтыми фонариками на ней.
После обеда открывается дверь и входит дед мороз. У него большая сумка с подарками. Он говорит: "Я желаю вам счастливого нового года", и дает подарки моей младшей сестре и мне. Мы счастливы получить подарки от него.
Потом мы смотрим телевизор и идем спать только в десять часов.
1 января я встаю рано утром и бегу в гостиную. Под елкой я вижу подарки для Нелли и меня от папы и мамы.
Потом папа и мама входят в комнату. Я благодарю их за подарки и вручаю им мой подарок - изображение нашей семьи. Я говорю: "Счастливого нового года", и они отвечают: "Тебе тоже".
После обеда приходит мой друг в гости. Мы желаем друг другу счастливого нового года и идем гулять.
