Helen WAS PREPARING dinner while George WAS WORKING in the garden when she HEARD the front doorbell ring. When she OPENED the door she SAW a beautiful bouquet of flowers with her name on it. She HAD TOTALLY FORGOTTEN that it was her birthday. People WERE CHATTING noisily, music WAS POURING out of the jukebox and fhe bar staff WERE WORKING hard. Nothing in the old pub CHANGED even though Simon HAD NOT VISITED the place for ten years. Suddenly he NOTICED a familiar face in the corner. His brother, with whom he HAD BEEN ARGUING all those years before, DECIDED to meet him after all. Может, в паре мест и могут быть варианты, Present Perfect здесь точно быть не может. Так же, как двойного отрицания.
