Task 5. Choose the correct tense (Past Simple or Past Perfect).
When I WENT to Paris last spring for a job interview. I HADN'T BEEN there for five years. I ARRIVED the evening before the interview, and SPENT a happy hour walking round thinking about the good times I HAD BEEN there as a student.
As I WAS (ПРОПУСТИЛИ) strolling by the Seine, I suddenly SAW a familiar face – it was Nedjma, the woman I HAD SHARED a flat with when I was a student, and whose address I LOST after leaving Paris. I could tell she HADN'T SEEN me, so I CALLED her name and she LOOKED up. As she TURNED towards me, I REALIZED that she HAD an ugly scar on the side of her face. She SAW the shock in my eyes, and her hand WENT up to touch the scar; she EXPLAINED that she HAD GOT it when she was a journalist reporting on a war in Africa.
She WASN'T uncomfortable telling me this; we FELT as if the years HADN'T PASSED, as if we HAD SAID goodbye the week before. She ARRIVED in Paris that morning, and she HAD a hospital appointment the next day. The doctors THOUGHT that they could remove the scar, but she would have to stay in Paris for several months. Both of us HAD the idea at the same time: if I GOT the job, we could share a flat again. And we could start by having a coffee while we BEGAN to tell one another everything that HAD HAPPENED ) to us in the past five years.
Task 6. Join the beginnings and ends to make sensible sentences.
1) After he had tried on six pairs of shoes he decided he liked the first ones best - После того как он примерил 6 пар туфель, он решил, что первые туфли ему нравятся больше остальных.
